1.He was the first and most accomplished black photographer.

3.He used stark realism and dreamy romanticism along with straight prints and heavily manipulated photos.
4.He became interested in photography at the age of 14 and he bought himself a camera and darkroom kit. He wasn’t able to be professional at this time and for many years he worked many odd jobs to support him. At the age of 30 he got his first gig as a photographer.
5.In the final years of his life he was for the first time noticed outside of Harlem when New York’s metropolitan museum featured some of his work. For his last fourteen years he was heavily praised, published and exhibited. He died in Washington DC receiving an honorary degree form Howard University.
