JOURNAL/ HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #6 DUE FRIDAY, NOV. 11TH

Read the article by Steve Mulligan on critiques:

1. What are some of the problems encountered by photographers using the "recurring pattern motif?"

2. How do the U-shaped ropes add to the image of the crates?

3. What does and does not work about having the extra crates on the right side?

4. What two changes does Mulligan suggest for the "Hillside, Puerto Rico" photograph to strengthen it?

5. In the "Street" photograph, what is included in the image to break up its overall monotony? What should be removed?

14 comments:

  1. 1. the danger of crossing into complete abstraction, also very difficult to employ this method and keep the image interesting
    2. the juxtaposition of dark and lights in the ropes make it intriguing
    3. it distracts from this composition, breaking up the facade of the other crates, its good as for giving it some depth and breaking up the the flat plane of the image
    4. a. a repeating highlight can enhance the composition
    b. by printing the photo down slightly and by applying a very weak solution of potassium ferricynide to the dominant large leaves
    5. The circle combined with the foreground bricks running at cross-angles to the upper ones
and they could removethis square cover of some sort in the left corner and he finds it to be distracting

  4. 1. This type of pattern has the potential to become very abstract and the tendency to be very dull.
    2. It breaks op the harsh straight lines of the wood crates and adds contrast because the ropes are very light against the dark crates.
    3. The extra crates break up the sameness more by adding a space between the other crates and adding depth. It breaks up the trick of the wall of crates and it’s very bright so it distracts from the highlight of the ropes.
    4. It is suggested that he crop out of the branch hanging on the right side for it distracts, and Steve also suggests that the picture maybe be bleached a little to increase contrast.
    5. The small circular water pipe and the sideways bricks of the sidewalk break up the roads straight lines. The square grate in the corner should be removed because it distracts the eye from the rest of the picture.
