JOURNAL/ HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #2 DUE FRIDAY, SEPT. 16TH

  1. Our first concepts have focused on the elements and principles of design. Why are these important in photography?
  2. Analyze the attached photo, Winter Fifth Avenue, 1982 by Alfred Stieglitz by answering the following questions about the light:
  • From what source(s) is the light coming from? (Be sure to note ALL available light sources.)
  • From what direction is the light source?
  • What is it hitting on?
  • What does the light reveal? (What does it hide?)
  • (Time of day might be important as well to denote the quality of light.)

  6. 1.) The Elements in photography are important because like in a drawing, they create the image that you wish to depict and it gives you even more fine detail than what a drawing could do.
2.) a) It alcould be coming from the reflection of the snow on the ground and in the air. It could aso be coming from the sky
    b) If you are looking at the picture, the light looks like it's coming from the left.
    c) The light is hitting the ground very vibrantly and the flakes tiny crystals reflect bright rays of lighht, which is an effect the picture has.
    d) The light reveals the tracks that were left from the carriages and horses, and the buildings.
    e) I thnk it's in the morning, like around 8:00.

  10. 1.The elements and principals of design are important because they are the basis of all artwork and remembering them will help you see how to create good compositions..
    2.
    A) Potential light sources may include: the Sun, The street lamps, Light coming from the inside of the buildings, or even lamps on the carriages.

    B) The biggest lights source would be sun coming from the top left.

    C) Its hitting on the snow banks on the sides of the road and on the buildings on the right.

    D) It reveals the windows of the building and the road because the lighter snow banks cause the darker road to stand out. The light also hides the horses drawing the carriages and the people walking on the sidewalks.

E)I would say it’s probably late morning, to maybe midday because the lamps on the roads are not yet lit as they would be if it were later in the day.
